Saturday looks to be a bit chilly with lows in the 50s. Feast is effectively outdoors. So, even though it's covered, it can get windy. Please dress accordingly. Cloaks are good.

Populace Activities
  • Norse Longboat Confection Competition and Populace Voting
    Rules for the competition...
         Each participant is given the same number of items in a starter kit that will include graham crackers, frosting for "glue" and various candy items. and the extras will be open to beg, borrow, steal or trade for.
    The competition starts at 11:00 and closes at 3:00. You can work as little or as much as you like during that time frame.  A card with the name of your boat and the names of the boat builders needs to be placed by the boat.. At 3:00 to 4:00 the populace votes using a bean count, every person coming through the gate gets a certain number of beans. The winner will be announced in court.
    • Riddlequest Letterboxing - Use a provided Norse poem to lead you to a hidden location with a stamp and a clue to the next location with a prize at the end of the quest.
      • Here's the clue for the 1st location...

    • Scribal activities hosted by the Silken Petals.

    • Lunch, a delicious Norse smorgasbord, will be available for $6 per person (tokens available for purchase at the gate)

    Armored Combat
    • Sheep Raids—steal sheep and carry them to your longhouse without being stopped by others trying to steal your sheep… an armored free –for-all with fuzzy stuffed animals

    • Irish Wife Grab—raid the Irish, steal a wife, carry her past other Vikings, angry Irish and get her safely home without being slain.

    • Beserker Challenge—feel free to go Beserk!  Challenge other Beserkers.  Froth at the mouth, jump up and down, run amok, kill people

    Beginning Viking Seam Treatments
    Viking seam treatments is not only a great way to decorate your viking garb, but is a functional way to add stability and to finish your seams. Class will include historical stitches, supplies, when each stitch was used, and extant examples. Stitches covered will be running stitch, oversewing, herringbone, blanket stitch, and osenstitch.

    Basics of warping an inkle loom, designing a pattern and weaving the ribbon. Also, some uses for ribbons.

    You will need 4 to 5 yards of light weight fabric preferably cotton or linen and a couple yards of 1/4" ribbon or thin cord for a draw string. There will be several kits available from the instructor for purchase for $5. contact the teacher at nhalden@comcast.net for information about class materials. Please bring a sewing machine if applicable.

    The Norse as Explorers
    We all know the Norse were fierce warriors, but they were also merchants, traders, and explorers.  This will allow participants to engage in a dialogue about the civilization of the Norse and their contribution to medieval society.
